Think You Have a High Mileage Car?

We here at Cannon Honda love to hear a good story about the success of a high mileage car that keeps on going. Most of the time, people associate high mileage cars with beaters that are on their last limb, but we tend to think of them as a testament to the craft and attention to detail paid by the automaker to their creation. At least, this is certainly the case with "Million-Mile" Joe's (Joe LoCicero) 1990 Honda Accord, which as his nickname implies, just hit one-million miles!

This is by far the most miles that we have ever seen logged on a vehicle. To put this into a more precise context: most drivers log around 13,500 miles on their vehicle every year. If you broke down Joe's annual mileage, he drove around 4,700 miles per month. That means that per quarter he racks up as many miles as most drivers tend to in a year!

Even more impressive is the fact that Joe bought his Accord use in 1996, when it already had 74,000 miles logged on it. But, just how did Joe manage to keep his vehicle running for one-million miles? First and foremost, Joe stuck to a maintenance schedule that is outlined in his owner's manual. He made sure to check and change his fluids on a regular basis, and he never rode the brakes too hard.

Of course, that is only the beginning for Joe's strict use of his vehicle. He also makes sure to never let the gas tank get too low; he changes his brake fluids every other year; and, he consistently uses Honda air, oil and fuel filters.

Overall, Joe's rigorous adherence to his vehicle's needs speaks highly to the potential that all new Honda models have to stay on the road for years longer than the competition. Most people are impressed when they break 250,000-300,000 miles, but for Joe that milestone is long gone. That is why we are proud to serve Honda's lineup at 3415 N. 14th St. Ponca City, OK 74601.

Another impressive aspect of Joe's feat is that in all of his years of ownership, his Honda Accord has only had to have a few major replacements made. He had to replace the fuel pump, both cooling fans, and the radiator (twice). Over the course of one-million miles that really isn't too bad.

When news of Million-Mile Joe's success hit Facebook, fans took to Honda's page (www.facebook.com/honda) to comment on his amazing feat:

- "Joe, I honestly got tears in my eyes! I love my '93 Accord (same color as yours!) so much and we're only at 250K miles...but my mechanic and I have a pact to keep her going until she can't go any more. Thanks so much for the inspiration! Go Joe!"1 - Ari Summerland
- "Wow! Guess my 04 Element with 133K mi is just getting broken in."2 - Dave Lewis
- "Incredible! That's just how Honda's are made!" 3 - Victor Cervantes
